Government - content strategy, content development / copywriting coaching

Client: Government of Saskatchewan

Project Summary: Full website redesign and expansion, including a new CMS implementation.

Role: Content Strategy, copywriting, training and coaching of in-house content team.

Goal: Create a universal content and communication strategy to update saskatchewan.ca. Take it from multiple disconnected and outdated ministry and department sites to a robust, unified resource that serves the needs of the diverse people and businesses of the province.

Tasks included:

  • Streamlining and reducing over 100,000 pages of content across 14 government departments, creating a content plan to support a new site architecture.

  • Creating a government-wide content strategy and writing guidelines to convert the clunky, department-centric user experience and content into a people-centric, task-based, easy-to-use resource for all things governmental.

  • Providing department-specific, audience-centric copywriting examples, recommendations, and
coaching for multiple content contributors across all government divisions.

Examples: saskatchewan.ca

New, streamlined, task-based website

All high-visibility areas present audience-focused content and tasks in plain language, providing a clear path for site visitors to quickly find what they’re looking for. Top audience tasks by seasonal and annual cycles, as well as emergency situations, are featured in prominent areas. (e.g. student aid during late fall, fishing licenses in early spring, natural disaster support as needed.)

Old, clunky and confusing website

Most content in the high-visibility areas (top banner, left column, centre column) focuses on low-traffic government content, not on important audience tasks. Top audience tasks were hidden behind one or more clicks in the upper right corner. No top tasks were presented on the home page except for one in the main banner space, which changed as needed.
